8. Expert Opinion
8.1 Gurit Holding AG
Headquartered in Wattwil, Switzerland, Gurit Holding AG, is an international industrial group
specialised on the development and manufacture of advanced composite materials, related
technologies and select finished parts and components. Gurit has established itself as a developer
and innovator in the composites industry and positioned itself as the leading global supplier of
composite materials and engineering services. With over 30 years’ experience in the practical
application of composites across various market sectors and projects, the global group has
production sites and offices in Switzerland, Germany, the UK, Canada, Spain, Australia, New
Zealand, the USA, Ecuador, Brazil, India and China.
The following interview was conducted in May 2014. The interviewee from Gurit, Mr Stefan
Gautschi, is the General Manager of Gurit Composite Materials.
Visiongain would like to thank Mr Stefan Gautschi and Gurit Composite Materials for their
cooperation and contribution.
8.1.1 Gurit’s Involvement in the Aerospace Composite Market
Visiongain: Could you outline your company’s involvement in the aerospace composite market?
Mr Stefan Gautschi: Gurit is one of the world’s leading suppliers and manufacturers for composite
materials. Gurit has been involved in the supply of composite materials to the aerospace industry
for over twenty years.
Our main focus throughout the years has been the supply of materials for interiors and for so-
called secondary structures. I’m not talking about wings or of the fuselage but for secondary
structures which are not critical in flying conditions. Supplies for interiors include materials for floor
panels, side wall panels, overhead storage compartments, ceilings, etc. Secondary structures are
aircraft fairings for cargo-doors, D-noses and so on. We have been a key supplier mainly to Airbus
and the entire Airbus supply chain for two decades and today we supply materials into virtually all
their aircraft.

October
2013
France,
Germany
Celanese Corporation announced that the new Airbus A400M military transport
aircraft features composite fuselage ice protection plates made with glass fabric-
based Fortron polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) from Celanese Corporation. Fortron
PPS is incorporated into a glass fabric by TenCate Advanced Composites. Fokker
Aerostructures in Hoogeveen, Germany, processes the material into finished
panels, which protect sides of the fuselage alongside the propeller tips from
damage caused by chunks of ice flung from the propellers. The glass fibre
reinforced Fortron PPS material is also used on the fixed wing leading edges of
the Airbus A380.
October
2013
Germany Celanese Corporation announced that the Faserinstitut Bremen e.V. (FIBRE) has
developed a cost-effective and efficient process to manufacture lightweight
aerospace components that use a continuous fibre-reinforced structural inlay
based on Fortron polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) from Celanese. In a pilot project,
