Introduction

This interactive guide provides a comprehensive outline of the trafficinformation services offered in each country. The focus of this guide is ontraffic information services that are encoded specifically for use bynavigation systems to enable dynamic route guidance.

It provides the reader with a factual outline of how traffic data is collected, processed, encoded and delivered in each country. Additionally, this guideincludes profiles on each service provider and summarises theirbackground, customers (if commercial) and coverage.

It is important to note that this guide does not provide rankings of serviceproviders or the quality of their services. Instead, this guide is intended tohelp automotive companies understand the increasingly complexrelationship between collectors, managers and distributors of trafficinformation.

DefinitionsRoad network coverage

Freeways

Freeways tend to be high-sped and high capacity highways that link cities and towns

Arterials

Arterial roads tend to be high-speed and moderate capacity roads that link cities and towns

Collectors

Collector roads tend to be low-speed roads that connect urban areas to Arterials or Freeways

Local

Local roads are small routes that tend to be exclusively used for land and residential access

Geographical coverage National

National services usual provide coverage across most (>75%) of the country, although no service can be truly ubiquitous

Regional

Regional services are typically operated by regional traffic control centres (e.g. Flanders & Wallonia in Belgium)

City

City-based services are typically offered by new service providers (e.g. Clear Channel in Mexico) or city administrators (e.g. RTA in Dubai)

Data sources Coverage Provider roles Delivery Back

Page 36: 2960 traffic information services database eng sample

DefinitionsService provider roles

Collectors of traffic data

Companies that collect raw data from a range of different sources (e.g. FCD or Journalistic).

Managers of traffic data

Most service providers undertake the role of processing and managing traffic information by using algorithms in order determine the location and extent of congestion. (Note. In this document there are a number of managers of traffic data which are not necessarily considered to be service providers, as they are not the final point-of-contact with navigation systems)

Encoders of traffic data

Service providers (as defined in this document) must at the very least manage their own encoding of data into a format that is readable by navigation systems (e.g. TMC or TPEG), even if their only other role is aggregating pre-processed traffic information from 3rd parties.

Deliverers of traffic data

Although all of the service providers indirectly deliver their traffic services, this document defines “Delivery” as owning the delivery channel through which services are sent to the navigation system. In the vast majority of cases, this is limited to broadcasters who also act as traffic information service providers (e.g. ARD in Germany).

Data sources Coverage Provider roles Delivery Back

Page 37: 2960 traffic information services database eng sample

DefinitionsDelivery channels

This guide only includes delivery channels that can be used by navigation systems, and not delivery channels such as IVR or websites that are accessed directly by consumers. The following are included:

Analogue FM

This is the most common delivery channel globally for traffic services

Digital terrestrial radio or TV

This includes services delivered over DAB, DMB, CMMB (China) and HD Radio (USA)

Digital satellite radio or TV

This includes services delivered over XM Satellite radio (USA) and S-DMB (South Korea)

Cellular networks

This includes services delivered over GPRS, CDMA or 3G

Beacons

This includes Infrared beacons or microwave beacons (as used in Japan)

Encoding & Encryption Encoding

This includes any navigation-specific approach to encoding, including TMC, TPEG and VICS

Encryption

This document includes information on the type of RDS TMC encryption used as it can have an impact on how navigation systems are developed (particularly if Full encryption is used).
