Ford's entry into the biggest new car segment, the midsize Fusion was engineered in both Dearborn, Michigan, and in Europe, where it is sold as the Ford Mondeo. That's significant because it marks the first time in over a decade that Ford's midsize sedan lineup has been the same the world over. While it has the benefit of reducing engineering and development costs for Ford, the automaker runs the risk of making a car that doesn't necessarily appeal equally to each diverse market across the globe.
2014 Ford Fusion
For the U.S., the Fusion comes in many flavors: Standard gas-only, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. Most Fusions, like our tester, aren't hybrids. Buyers interested in a gas-only model can choose between three trim levels and four engines, although not all are available together. Our 2013 model year SE grade tester was equipped with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, making it the most commonly-ordered Fusion you'll find. Our car was also ordered up with fuel-saving start/stop technology, which boosted its mpg to 24/37 mpg (28 mpg combined), 1 mpg higher all around than an unequipped Fusion.

An early arrival to the downsizing party, the Fusion throws away the naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engines that propelled its predecessors in favor of a turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder. Cranking out an impressive 178 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. of torque, this little 1.6-liter clearly has the on-paper guts.
