Salvador Dali (1904 – 1989) was a prominent Spanish Catalan surre-alist whose works include painting, �lm and sculpture. His paintings are fantastical renderings of worlds and images that push the limits of the imagination. Dali was part of a revolutionary art movement known as surrealism along with friends and fellow artists Luis Bunuel, Federico Garcia Lorca, and Man Ray.

Much of his most well-known works are set in barren plains where whimsical creatures play, and warped luminous �gures melt from their solid state.

Dali was born in Figueres, Catalonia, 9 months after the death of an older broth who he was named after.

It is said that one day young Salvador’s mother took him to his brother’s grave and told him that he was a reincarnation of his brother, which Dali came to believe. She was also responsible for en-couraging his art habit which eventually led him to the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid. The persona that is ‘Dali’ grew during this time where he also perfected his signature up-turned mustache look.

His paintings contain a strong element of time where light and re�ection are used to give the e�ect of continual motion. Dali also produced Un Chien Andalou (The Andalusian Dog), which is consid-ered one of the greatest pieces of cinema that emerged from the modernist movement in Europe.
