BETTER PHOTOGRAPHSIN 3 EASY STEPS

By @LeeCarnihan

BEFORE THE STEPS COMES THE STORY...

In 2001 I flew to Prague to learn how to teach

English as a foreign language. This was

something of a risky sea change in career for

me but I figured the worst that could happen

was that I would end up spending five weeks in

a beautiful city drinking nice beer.

What I didn't expect was to learn how to take

better photographs. This happened entirely by

accident. On the first day of the course, our tutor

gave us half an hour to think of something to talk

to the other course members about, by way of

introducing ourselves to each other.

When it came to my turn, I waffled on about

travelling. Next up was a young, blond

American. She stood up and said "Hi, I'm

Caroline and I'm not going to talk about myself.

I'm going to share with you some tips on how to

take better photographs. Maybe that will help

you enjoy your stay in Prague more." I listened

intently. Up till then, my photographic skills had

been nothing short of dismal.

Here are her three tips:

1. Have the light behind you

2. Have an angle in the shot

3. Have a fore, middle and background

That was it. I was surprised it wasn't more

technical. I was eager to try them out.

Here are the results...

THOSE 3 STEPS AGAIN...

1. HAVE THE LIGHT BEHIND YOU2. HAVE AN ANGLE IN THE SHOT3. HAVE A FORE, MIDDLE AND BACKGROUND
