Analysis on Crazy about one direction

mixed documentary because it shares and uses things like voice over, archive footage, interviews , various camera work and a good sense of B-roll.

ThemesThe documentary explores how

people (in this case adolescent girls) can become obsessed with pop culture things like one direction. Again it could be to do with can the media and music industry control us. Just like The devil made me do it, This documentary portrays to us that young people can be influenced and become to idolise figures in the media.

Narrative structure Non linear: The documentary was not following a

chronological order because there were some parts where they were following different people at different moments and times at the documentary.

Single strand: Despite how the documentary was following various girls on their obsessions in the documentary, it was still never the less a single strand. I is a single strand because it only follows one arch bases; that of the fan obsessions of one direction themselves.

Closed ending: Because there's nothing else to add towards the end, its just simply about the fans of one direction , there is no complexity towards it, especially towards the end.

Archive and graphics Graphics: Graphics themselves are very

simple, the opening title only has white basic font and a black background. The banners showing the occupation for the interviewees again hold this as well. There is also font used to tell of locations.

Archive material: Archive material in the documentary included social media pages (like twitter), mobile footage of coaches and concert. Fan art and photo shopped pictures of one direction, Music videos and fan fictions.

CameraCamera: the camera in this documentary

holds things in the interviews like close ups and medium long shots, but some of the interviews do not follow the rule of thirds as some of the interviewees are put central to the shot. However, this does not spoil the documentary and is actually done very well and unnoticed. There is also hand held shots (actuality footage) of the concerts as well and of the action of the fans waiting outside for the cars and places. There is also establishing shots as well.

soundThe voice over is of a standard English

female narrator who again has little emotion but keeps the narrative in flow.

Through out the documentary there is burst of instrumentals, which correspond to curiosity over the subject.

There is also occasionally bursts of one direction songs as well, during b-roll footage or archive.

Overall though there is little music in the background of the documentary.

Editing and mise en sceneMise en Scene: the Mise en scene in the

interviews were of the bedrooms of teenage girls. This corresponds to the themes of youth culture and how bedrooms are depicted as a sort of haven in teen life. The bedrooms reflect the girls individual personality and at the end of the day the Fans are also typical teens.

Editing: the editing is basic and conventional in a documentary, using simple cuts as always and nothing complex.
