• Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. It

may also involve removal of the cervix, ovaries,

fallopian tubes and other surrounding structure.

• Type of hysterectomy

• Shape of uterus

• Endometrium

• Cervix

• Myomas

• Hysterectomy, in the literal sense of the word,

means merely removal of the uterus. However other

organs such as ovaries, fallopian tubes and the

cervix are very frequently removed as part of the

surgery.

: complete removal

of the uterus, cervix, upper vagina, and parametrium

Indicated for cancer.

: Complete removal of

the uterus and cervix, with or without oophorectomy.

: removal of the

uterus, leaving the cervix.

• The uterus is a dense organ.

• Usually cone biopsies is received.

• To allow fixation, the cervix is removed.

• Uterus is opened by a just leaving the

two halves in contact at the fundus.

• The anterior and posterior sections are then ‘toast-

racked’ by apart,allow fixative to

enter.

• A total of sixty samples from human breast,

uterus, liver, skin and abdominal fat were

fixed for 8; 24

with

• Volume to tissue ratios of and

and manually processed with

isopropyl alcohol and mineral oil mixtures.

• All the slides prepared were suitable for

diagnostic purpose.

• The differences

between the samples was not statistically

significant for the different fixation volume

ratios tested, but the differences between

fixation periods and tissues types were.

• 48 hours are the optimum fixation

period..

• Neither the time and volume ratio

combinations affected the pH of NBF

• Fixing tissues with a ratio of NBF

volume to tissue volume of 2:1 for 48

hours at 20-22°C was enough to assure

• proper fixation and infiltration of the

tested tissues.

Findings indicate that the specimen should be placed in

fixative as soon as possible after excision and before

opening to ensure minimum distortion of the specimen.

: surgical removal of uterus

: lateral incision of uterus in which

tissue thickness should be 1-1.5cm.

: whole uterus is put in a jar

containing neutral buffer formalin for 8-24 hours or 48

hours at 20 to 22°C.

• :

• :Specimen should be placed in a fixative

immediately to prevent distortion after excision.
