The Social NetworkA Case Study1The Social Network had a budget of 40 million dollars.The Social Network has an official website. http://www.thesocialnetwork-movie.com/There was a trailer released on the official website, YouTube and IMDB, to create word of mouth, as well as many TV interviews on the internet featured on websites such as YouTube and IMDB. A poster was made to show at cinemas and bus stops. They also made a YouTube channel for the film. As you can see most of their marketing was done on the internet.The film was shown at Tokyo film festival. The festival ran from October 23rd till the 31st in 2010. It was the opening film to the festival. It was also shown at the New York film festival on the 24th September 2010 in which the film opened up the festival. The film was also rated 4 out of 5 stars by The Guardian, Screen Rant and Empire Online. Also Total film rated it 5 out of 5 stars. It was also shown at the American Film Festival on the 7th October 2010. Also it was shown at So Paulo International Film Festival on the 4th November 2010.

Director: David Fincher, he is well known for directing Seven (1995), Fight Club (1999) and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button (2008).

Jesse Eisenberg: he is well known for being in Zombieland (2009) and Adventureland (2009).Since The Social Network he has been in Rio (2011).

Andrew Garfield: before The Social Network he has appeared in Doctor Who for 2 episodes in series 3 and Never Let Me Go (2010). SinceThe Social Network he has been offered to play Peter Parker in the rebootOf Spiderman. This is due to his success in The Social Network.

Justin Timberlake: Before The Social Network, he was in a boyband calledNsync, he then went and had a successful solo music career, before landing a big voice role in Shrek The Third (2007). Now after being in The Social Network. He has been offered various film roles such as Yogi Bear (2010) and Friends With Benefits which is to be released late this year.The film was produced by Columbia Pictures and Relativity Media.

Columbia Pictures is a subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment. It was founded in 1919 in which then it was an independent company. In 1989 it was brought by Sony. It probably financed the majority of The Social Network. They dont have their own website, but seeing as they are brought by Sony it makes sense that the films they produce go on Sony Pictures website. http://www.sonypictures.co.uk/

Relativity Media is an independent company which also finances film and makes them. It probably partly financed The Social Network. They have a website http://www.relativitymediallc.com/default.asp.

In the UK opening weekend of its released it made 2,486,454 (17th October 2010). In the second week of its release in the UK it made 5,359,109 (24th October 2010). By the 31st October 2010 it made 7,868,168. Then on the 7th November 2010 it made 9,029,931. By the near end of November (21st November 2010) it made 10,178,808. There are two posters to promote the film. They are both very similar.

Distribution

Because Columbia Pictures is a subsidiary of Sony, they have gone for the obvious way of using synergy, this saves money and gets the film out to the audience quicker. The tagline for the film which was featured on the poster was You dont get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies. There was a 2 minute trailer released on July 16 2010, it was shown in cinemas and the internet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB95KLmpLR4They also released a YouTube channel to promote the film, it features interview from the cast and crew, as well as preview clips of the film. http://www.youtube.com/user/SocialNetworkMovie?blend=2&ob=1There were also TV spot trailers shown on many TV channels.The key image of the film was a picture of the main actor Jesse Eisenberg who plays Mark Zuckerberg on the film poster. The unique selling point of the film was that it is about Facebook which is a very popular website. This will make people who use Facebook go and see it.
