Simple Present

•When do you use it?1.To talk about general truths i.e. to talk

about something that was true in the past, is true now, and will be true in the future.

2.To talk about habits or rituals or routines

Simple Present

• Main Verbs used in Simple Present sentences1.1st Person Pronouns: I / We - the person who

is speaking. Verbs used in 1st person sentence are always the verb stem (basic form of the verb).• Example: I go to school everyday.

2.2nd Person Pronoun: You - the person whom one is speaking to. Verbs used in 2nd person sentence are always the verb stem.• Example: You walk to school everyday.

• Main Verbs used in Simple Present sentences3.3rd Person Pronouns: He/ She/ They/ It - the

person(s)/ thing(s) whom one is talking about. Verbs used in 3rd person sentence can be singular or plural. Singular verbs end with –s. Plural verbs do NOT end with –s.• Examples• She cleans the windows once a week. (singular)• They visit Grandma every weekend. (plural)

Present Progressive/Continuous• The verb “to-be” is the auxiliary verb

(a.k.a helping verb) used in Present Progressive sentences. • This verb tense is formed by combining

the helping verb "to be" with the "-ing" (or the Present Participle) form of the main verb:

•Subject + am/ is/ are + verb-ing• She is baking muffins.

Present Progressive/Continuous• The tense of the sentence is determined

by the auxiliary verb. The auxiliary verb changes according to the number of subjects. The present participle remains unchanged in both singular and plural sentences.• Example (singular)• Penny is running for the Osprey house.• Example (plural)• The lecturers are attending a workshop.

Present Progressive/Continuous• When do you use it?1.To express an activity that is in progress at

the moment of speaking. The activity is temporary. It began in the past, is happening right now, and will probably end at some time in the future • Examples • I am writing an article for my website.
