T he 2014-15 year can best be

described as a year of development and progress for the Australian pork industry.

This growth occurred not only in Australian pork supply but also in demand for our product by consumers. It also occurred in import volumes with domestic production shortages leading to imports having to fill the gaps for processing into ham and bacon.

It was also the first year of operating under our new APL Strategic Plan 2015–2020. A new fine-tuned direction is expected to help to build our Australian pork differentiation attributes and leverage these to enter new and exciting markets to our north, whilst consolidating our presence in Australia’s domestic market.

Industry trendsAustralia’s pig processing figure

for 2014–15 was over 4.9 million – the highest result since the producer profitability crisis of 2007–08. This increase in production was not only the result of the greater numbers of sows but also higher levels of productivity, in particular better numbers of pigs, per sow, per year.

On-farm profitability has received a boost despite grain prices in some areas of the eastern seaboard remaining stubbornly higher than what we are traditionally used to.

During 2014–15, pig prices at the farm gate have ended higher ($0.10 per kilogram higher than the same time the

previous year). Australian pork export volumes

ended the year on a downward trend, mainly due to very high domestic demand for Australian pork. This was despite some early growth indications, particularly as a result of the weakening Australian dollar over the last couple of years.

This high domestic demand for Australian pork, especially in the fresh pork sector, also lead to substantial increases in import volumes over the past year. Imports have acted to fill the void in the market left by a shortage of Australian product.

Domestic supply and demandGrowing demand for Australian

pork can be attributed to a number of factors in 2014–15. The cattle and sheep industries are having difficulty in fully supplying the market (partly due to very strong export demand), which has increased prices for those commodities. There have also been good responses to many of the promotions run by APL for our domestic pork business.

Our ‘Get Some Pork on your Fork’ brand advertising continues, now with more of a focus on the health attributes of Australian pork.

PorkStar has now celebrated its 10th anniversary – a great lifetime of serving Australia’s pig producers very effectively. PorkStar events are now iconic in the foodservice world.

The already mentioned strong demand for Australian pork in 2014–15 resulted in an increase of consumption of pork per capita in Australia by around half a kilogram. When put into perspective the habitual nature of meat preferences and that total fresh pork consumption is still under 10 kg per capita per annum, this is a fantastic result.

International initiativesThe new APL Strategic plans

includes the medium to long term objective to broaden the demand for Australian pork. This means, amongst other options, moving into new international markets. China being an obvious target.

The government has successfully negotiated some good conditions for Australian pork in future trade with China through the new Free Trade Agreement (FTA). However, we are aware that it will take some years to negotiate the necessary technical

protocols with Chinese government officials to open up this trade. In the past year we have progressed discussions with the Department of Agriculture in a positive sense and are building relationships with the right Chinese government officials to underpin a successful future negotiation around these protocols.

Productivity progressAPL continues to believe that

innovation will drive a successful future for our industry. We believe our in-house research and development program and the added power of the High Integrity Pork CRC program are well equipped to initiate and oversee these innovations. Australia has always punched above its weight when it comes to pork industry research and development. We want to keep it that way.

We are already planning on an industry-leveraged research and development system that will operate after the present Pork CRC has ceased. This will help to maintain the weight and power of our across-industry innovation systems.

Differentiation attributesWe know that Australian pork is

never going to be the world’s cheapest. Our pork needs to be a superior product to command a premium. For that reason differentiation of our product (in particular against other pork sources, here and in export markets) is absolutely critical for our success.

The key themes of differentiation for our industry exist around three components – product quality, ethics and integrity.

In the ethics arena, industry’s transition relating to changes to sow housing – moves to cease the use of sow stalls – and production shifts with softer environmental footprints are progressing very well.

Recently, we were able to advise the community that around our Shaping Our Future sow stall phase out initiative, we are now over 70% complete in transitioning the industry away from sow stalls.

Product integrity progressIn the product integrity area, we

believe we are at the leading edge of what is capable of pork industries anywhere in the world. Our aim is to assure the quality and safety of our CONTINUED ON PAGE 20 w

Research Institute Limited (APRIL). We will invest in shorter term

projects (maximum 24 months) and innovation projects (12 months) in 2016/17 and beyond.

So, now is the time to make your mark, as we jointly establish a platform that builds on the additional research and training activity generated by Pork CRC for the next four years and beyond.

Commercial impactAs part of that transition process

and in order to give a greater commercial focus to all that we do, in July we appointed Dr Charles Rikard-Bell as our inaugural Manager, Commercialisation and Research Impact.

We have projects focussed on improving pig nutrition, enhancing weaner performance, increasing reproduction and enriching the lives of group housed sows are at various stages of development and commercialisation.

The projects range from proof of concept to ready for adoption, with four key projects nearing commercial reality i.e. AusScan Online, a performance enhancer for weaned pigs, patents on improving reproduction and poured blocks to enrich group housed pigs.

All four are well advanced and poised to make a positive impact on Australia’s pork industry.

Close working relationships, built on trust and mutual benefits, with Aunir, University of Queensland, Elanco and Ridley, had helped turn well thought out, cleverly researched ideas and concepts into commercially viable propositions.

World firstPork CRC research developed

AusScan the world’s first in-vivo energy values for cereal grains and reactive lysine values for ‘heat damaged’ canola and soybean meal using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Pork CRC now has a business agreement with UK company Aunir to make AusScan NIRS calibrations available on-line.

Pork CRC continues to work with Aunir, pork producers, laboratories and feed mills to ensure Australia’s pig industry had access to the latest calibrations.

In conjunction with BEC Animal Nutrition, Dr Eugeni Roura from University of Queensland and Pork CRC developed a performance enhancer

C ooperative Research Centre for

High Integrity Australian Pork (Pork CRC) reached the half way mark of our eight year journey in June this year.

And what an adventurous and exciting journey it’s been.

We’ve certainly enjoyed the ride and, along with our valued participants, we thank all industry stakeholders for jumping on-board.

During our first four years we invested about $18 million in 170 projects across our four programs, including more than 20 projects carried over from the inaugural Pork CRC. In the same period we recruited 26 postgraduate students and supported six industry placements and four postdocs, so we were active and facilitated excellent outcomes for industry across the programs.

We called for our seventh (2016-2017) investment round in November 2015 and plan to continue to invest in R&D during the next two years and beyond the life of this CRC.

We also announced at our Melbourne annual stakeholders’ meeting in November, positive plans to transition to an alternative research entity, after our current funding and Commonwealth Government agreement expires June 30, 2019.

Pork CRC has now called for highly innovative proposals in our 2016/17 investment round, with priority to be given to those with revenue generating potential for Pork CRC and eventually the new entity, Australasian Pork

Dr Roger CampbellCEO Pork CRC

pre-mix for weaned pigs. This novel pre-mix is based on the outcome of some excellent science on ingredient preferences of weaned pigs.

Pork CRC holds patents on improving reproduction via research it supported by Dr William Van Wettere, University of Adelaide, who showed that adding ractopamine to sow lactation diets minimised sow body protein loss.

Executing patentsThe commercial product, produced

by Elanco and marketed as Paylean, supports improved subsequent reproduction. Executing the patents will allow Australian pork producers to access this potentially valuable technology.

With enrichment of gestating sows a major consideration for the industry, Ridley Mills and Pork CRC have begun commercial studies on the behaviour of sows at mixing.

Early Pork CRC supported work by Tracey Muller at SunPork Farms North in Queensland showed that providing poured blocks reduced chase time and increased lying time in the first four days after mixing.

As Pork CRC moves deeper into its second half, we will run a very sharp commercial eye over any potential game changers and this is where Charles will focus his time and energy.

Meanwhile, below I’ve highlighted some of our recent program achievements: Program 1: resolution of the space and nutritional ‘requirements’ of group housed sows and the excellent reproductive performance able to be achieved with group housed pregnant sows, provided a few basic rules are followed. Our researchers have taken the lead globally in the area and if you care to delve into the details revealed regarding the behaviour of sows kept in groups, you will find it is quite complex and utterly fascinating. Program 2: our researchers have provided much needed diagnostic tests for most common enteric and respiratory pathogens affecting the Australian herd and, equally importantly, information on the antibiotic sensitivity and resistance of the pathogens. New strains of all pathogens have developed and their antimicrobial resistance has increased. Researchers have also provided alternative strategies for minimising the impact of enteric CONTINUED ON PAGE 19 w

and respiratory pathogens on animal health and performance and Associate Professor Susanne Hermesch and her team at AGBU, University of New England, have made good progress in developing selection strategies for disease resilience and animal robustness in general.Program 3: we have recovered somewhat from the initial shock concerning consumers’ perceived poor eating quality experiences with Australian pork, in particular with cuts such as the loin and silverside. We have identified several factors that consistently affect eating quality and we’ve made great progress in ‘reducing’ cooking failure in the home and potentially further increasing the demand for Australian pork. You will hear more about this project, which involves the 6-2-2 cooking message, in 2016. I commend APL, in particular, for their good work in this area.

It seems much of the eating quality problems for the loin and silverside are associated with processing. As you’d expect, it differs across supply chains. The good news is this can be markedly improved by processing interventions such as aitch bone hanging, moisture infusion and electrical stimulation, albeit the effectiveness of each differs across supply chains – but they all have at least one solution and we expect to identify more.Program 4: we have assisted in the effective use of effluent to generate biogas and even to power piggeries, largely through the advice and research outcomes from our Bioenergy Support Program, astutely managed out of Queensland University by Dr Stephan Tait. We have seen the discovery of

algae that grow on undiluted piggery effluent and the refinement and commercialisation of the AusScan NIRS calibrations for rapidly determining the DE of grains and the reactive lysine content of soy bean meal and canola meal.

Outcomes to date have exceeded my expectations and contributed significantly to differentiating our industry from global competitors and to the increased demand for high integrity Australian pork.

All outcomes are on our website www.pokcrc.com.au under the different program areas.

CRC transition Our research efforts will continue

during the next four years. To ensure there is no lag in research activity in this period and to maintain the additional R&D and training created by Pork CRC, we intend to transition Pork CRC to an alternative R&D entity which will invest in R&D through the Pork CRC in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 and it its own right in 2019-2020 and beyond.

The new entity, APRIL (Australasian Pig Research Institute Limited), currently exists as a not for profit R&D business and holds much of the IP and revenue generated by Pork CRC.

APRIL currently has one member, Pork CRC, but is now open to new membership with its research objectives and constitution now established and available in a prospectus.

Funding figures On average, Pork CRC currently

receives $2.5 million from the Federal Government, $1.29 million from participants other than APL and $1.0 million annually from APL, a total of

v CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 some $4.8 million annually, of which some $2.0 million is spent on salaries, the board, communications, program and subprogram leaders, travel and students outside of projects and sponsorship. This leaves around $2.8 million to invest in research. This is the target revenue for APRIL.

Overhead costs will be markedly reduced and administration of the new entity will potentially be contracted to APL.

The new entity will not receive anything via the CRC program from the Federal Government, but it’s hoped APL will continue to invest in APRIL and that initially APRIL will have at least eight additional members and adequate revenue from IP generated by Pork CRC to maintain an effective and value added R&D and training program.

Membership mattersMembership is contemplated to

be $75,000 annually on a three year rolling basis. Members will be able to nominate a board member of APRIL and determine R&D priorities and investment in R&D. Other levels of membership are being considered, with new membership to be approved by the board.

If you have any questions on the transition, or any other Pork CRC matters, please don’t hesitate to contact me, email [email protected] or Tel 08 8313 7683.

Finally, I thank my executive team, all directors of Pork CRC and the Federal Government and producers for their ongoing commitment and support.

I am sure the second half of the CRC for High Integrity Australian Pork will be even more exciting and rewarding than the first.porkjournal

product, verified through some of the best-practice traceability systems anywhere on offer.

Some product issues in our industry over the past twelve months have highlighted our need for continued diligence in this area. We also see it as a big selling point in our future possibilities in China where ‘healthy, safe and natural’ is king.

We have three systems that support the high quality of our product integrity. We are continuing to develop them as major industry assets.

They are our quality assurance system APIQP® (Australian Pig Industry Quality Assurance Program) and our traceability systems. These traceability systems include; PigPass for trace forward, in particular around management of pig disease issues and Physi-trace for trace back to farm of origin from samples of pork.

Government issuesWe continue to recognise the status

of government as one of the major investors into our company and our industry. In 2014–15, the government contributed around $5 million to our research and development efforts and this makes a huge difference to our outcomes.

As of 1 July 2015, we now have a new funding agreement with government. This agreement was negotiated over a period of months to supersede the previous version. This underpins a positive and constructive relationship with government as one of our key investors.

We are very heartened by the positive progress in the past 12 months around the Country of Origin Labelling (CoOL) regulations. This issue has been one working against our industry for many years, and has been a target of much effort for change. At last, we see the light at the end of the tunnel for some significant changes that will work much more effectively for our consumers and our industry.

APL was successful in the first round of the Rural Research and Development for Profits program,

offered by government to provide higher levels of funding for research and development. We now have a number of projects, mostly in collaboration with other research and development corporations, to provide positive innovation outcomes for our industry. We will be enthusiastically participating in future rounds of this program as well.

Membership relationsAPL as a membership body sees

relationships with our members as core to our ability to service our industry. This is not always an easy task, as recognised in the recommendations from our performance review conducted in 2014. The great diversity of pig producers across the country means that their needs and preferred modes of communication differ greatly.

We now have several initiatives in place to improve our ability to engage with the majority of producer groups including smaller producers. Whilst the smaller producers only make up a small percentage of our total production, they are nevertheless an important group of stakeholders for the industry in total.

Community attitudesOur ability to operate as an industry

free of encumbrances depends on the support that we receive from the community in general.

It is important to recognise there are groups within the community with an agenda that runs in opposition to our industry. They go out of their way to misrepresent what we do, to promote their objectives.

Whilst there is a lot of scepticism in the community about the intentions of these groups, we know that the currency of our future social licence to operate is industry transparency. We are proud of the operations and the achievements of our industry and we want the community to know about these.

We continue to look for opportunities to present the true face of our industry to the community for those who want to know more about how we produce their pork.
