At the end of April when the animal welfare organisation brought the six big cats to the Four Paws big cat sanctuary, Lionsrock, Sara and Hera were very weak, malnourished and their bones had not formed properly. The prognosis for these two young cubs was not good. X-rays showed that there was almost no skeletal structure. These deformities were caused by very poor nutrition, living in a freezing- cold concrete cage and no sunshine at the Romanian zoo. The team at Lionsrock has been caring for them since their arrival, treating the wounds on their feet caused by not being able to walk properly, and adding supple- ments to their diet. “The improvement in the physical condition of Sara and Hera is now very visible,” says Hildegard Pirker, head of the animal welfare department. “Their coats are shiny and their eyes are bright and vigilant. Both sisters grew quite a bit. They can now enjoy the sun and soft grass, which stimulate them to have fun and play as young lions naturally do.” As they have become stronger and their wounds have healed, the veterinarian decided to conduct thorough examinations at an animal hospital in Bethlehem. The team was astounded as they saw in each x-ray the formation of bones and joints where none previously existed, the devel- opment of teeth and the complete healing of their feet. Growth plates are still forming in some areas and looking at the x-rays from two months ago till now, their future looks much brighter. The Pirker also provided a boost of calcium, vitamins A, C, D and E supple- mentation which aids in bone growth and development, together with sunlight. “There is still some way to go for the bones to develop in density and formation and we’ll continue to provide the love, care and attention for them to have the best possible future,” says Pirker. The physical condition of Sara and Hera’s parents, Tarzan and Siba, has significantly improved. Siba often plays with her daughters and Tarzan has re- gained most of his confidence and is patrolling his new territory. The two tigers, Tomi and Riwa, are enjoying their new life. They both visibly gained weight and they enjoy taking a dip in their pool. The construction of their permanent enclosure is still underway. Four Paws is also about to build a veterinary clinic at Lionsrock in the near future to be able to more rapidly treat the big cats, as most of the animals come from very poor conditions and have various health issues. ) To see what Tomi looked like when he arrived at Lionsrock visit http://malu- tinews.co.za and follow the Facebook link.

Chris Janeke het by Mutual & Federal begin

Hy sal hom in Augustus by die vierander spanlede in Europa aansluit.

Marinus salWikus vergesel. Hulle vertrek op 1Augustus en keer op 13 Augustus te-rug.
