THE TYPICAL SLIDE• The goal of a presentation is to communicate effectively with an audience

using each medium properly (“properly” = the way it works best for the audience)

• If your slides look like this, you are using the visual communication medium incorrectly because you are changing visual to written communication

• Audiences will read this slide as soon as it appears on the screen

• Because audiences can’t read and listen at the same time, they will read the slide first and then come back to listening to you

• Because you’re still on Bullet #1 and your audience has read the entire thing, the need for you as the presenter is gone. You’ll never catch up to what your audience already knows by reading ahead

The three-second rule of

THIS IS A TEST... SLIDE• Here are a few additional tips to help you improve your visual design:

• A great place to find images is Compfight.com. I do not use Google Images.

• Compfight is a Flickr search engine. Remember to search “Commercial” images because we work at Full Sail University, a for-profit college.

• Templates, clip art, slideuments, and stock photos let audiences know the following: 1) you are boring, 2) you don’t care about them, and 3) you haven’t joined the presentation revolution. It’s time to get real!

• Audiences crave effective presentations. If you don’t create a presentation with their needs in mind, you are not doing your job as a presenter.

Page 60: Introduction to Slide Design: 7 Rules for Creating Effective Slides

Purposeless Animation• This animation has no purpose

If you’re using animation

to grab your audience’s attention,

your content and delivery must not be that great...

• Slides should be simple.

• Animation takes away from that simplicity.

• Only use it when absolutely necessary.
